About Durango

Durango is a small town located in Southwest Colorado In the San Juan Mountains and near the New Mexican border. Durango has a rich railroad and mining history. It's the most populous city of La Plata County and was organized by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to serve the San Juan mining district. 
 
The 19th-century Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad steam train passes mountains and canyons. In the city center, its affiliated Railroad Museum displays restored locomotives, aircraft and a baggage car converted into a movie theater. Nearby, the Powerhouse Science Center offers interactive exhibits in a former power plant. 

Fort Lewis College draws higher education students to small classes on a mountain campus, offering liberal arts and dynamic academic programs. The school calls itself “the Southwest’s crossroads of education and adventure.”  
Durango’s Animas River Valley and San Juan Mountain offer opportunities for mountain biking, whitewater rafting, hiking, and horseback riding. Durango is also considered the archeological hub of the Southwest” with many nearby wonders, including ancient cave dwellings. Mesa Verde National Park is only 35 miles west of Durango.

Once you've been to Durango, you'll never stop reminiscing about all the beauty, culture, and history this Colorado city has to offer. In fact, locals say that 'once you've been to Durango, you'll never truly leave it behind." It may be because this city has been immortalized in Hollywood classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to National Lampoon's Vacation and City Slickers.

You can expect to find spicy, New Mexican-inspired dishes in Durango as well as traditional American treats like a local, grass-fed burger. Eating local is big in Durango, that's because there is an abundance of local grown meat, vegetables, and fruits that many local restaurants incorporate into their menus.   • Purgatory Resort is a family-oriented ski resort located 26 miles north of downtown Durango. 

  • Mesa Verde National Park is in southwest Colorado. It's known for its well-preserved Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings, notably the huge Cliff Palace.
