I learned that the hard way, and I never want anyone else to have to go through what I went through. When I was in my early twenties raising two young children, my then-husband and I decided to buy our first home together. We were so excited to be homeowners that we went with the first real estate agent and mortgage broker we came across. That turned out to be a huge mistake. They made no attempt to educate us about the process, and at the closing table, we were horrified to learn that they had changed all of our figures and raised our interest rate. The payment was more than we could afford, but we didn’t think we had a choice at that point. We thought we had to sign.
