Gunnison is surrounded by ski areas, a national park, lakes, rivers, and mesas. It has a charming small-town feel. In the summer, Blue Mesa Reservoir - Colorado's largest body of water - is full of canoes, sailboats, pontoons and motor boats, and people are water-skiing, fishing, and even parasailing in the refreshing water.
In the winter, residents are just a 30-mile drive from Crested Butte Mountain Resort and 45 miles from Monarch Mountain. Visitors have plenty of options in addition to the Gunnison Nordic Center's groomed cross-county trails, snowmobiling, ice-skating, and more.
The city typically experiences moderate snowfalls, with an average of 50 inches per year. Early fall and late spring snows are not uncommon, and snow can remain on the ground in town from as early as November to as late as April. Surrounding mountains experience very heavy snowfall with longer periods of snow on the ground. Many locations average 300–400 inches annually.
